Cracked Paintjob - _TNY_6271

This is a click beetle known as Selatosomus aeneus. Look at the top of the pronotum, right behind the head - it looks like the "paint" has cracked there and a big flake has come off.

 

No idea how this happened. I mean, it's not like the colouration on beetles are pinted on so I can't understand how a piece would chip off.
