All Eyes - _TNY_0475
The expression "I'm all ears" is quite common, but for male hoverflies, like this pellucid fly (Volucella pellucens) on top of a darker variety great masterwort (Astrantia major), perhaps the expression "I'm all eyes" would be more fitting?
Looking at the eyes is the absolutely easiest way to sex hoverflies. If the eyes are separated (like on this one: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/48626283817/), then it is a female, but if they touch eachother like on this one - then it's a male.
