Bad Timing - _TNY_6431

I set up the camera on a tripod to capture this banded king shoemaker (Archaeoprepona demophon) at "my" butterfly house. This was to cature the dorsal side of the wings which is a velvety black with a wonderful turquoise-blue, metallic band going over each wing.

Before I was ready to take the photo, my subject decided that it was time to keep the wings closed instead and offered me this view which is still pretty - but not quite as spectacular as the dorsal one.

The wings look a bit crumpled here which is because it failed to get them perfectly flat after emerging from the chrysalis before they dried and hardened.

This sometimes lead to the butterfly being unable to fly and thus being doomed, but this one had them flat enough to still be able to take to the air.

Also, how about that pink proboscis? I don't think I have ever seen another one coloured like that.
