Pale Owl - TNY_2454

The giant owl butterfly (Caligo memnon) is also known as the pale owl butterfly.

When seeing the underside it isn't immediately clear why, but when they open up their wings, it becomes readily apparent as they have this rather odd and soft - but very pretty - blue hue on the dorsal side of the wings.

For a shot showing the underside o the wings, have a look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51961374122/

With this species, the "giant" part of the common name is quite fitting as their wingspan can reach 150 mm/6".

This was taken at the Haga Ocean butterfly house back in 2019 using a Canon 6D instead of the 5D2 I was using at the moment. I did this by borrowing my brother's camera as it has significantly better performance at higher ISO which was necessary as they only allow natural light photography.
