The very appropriately named black-and-red-bug (Lygaeus equestris) is probably the most common insect I see around the house. They are around from early spring to late autumn/fall.
And as long as we are talking names: The Swedish one "riddarskinnbagge" comes from (templar) knights. A "riddare" is the Swedish word for knight and if you look at the shape of the black part of the abdomen, doesn't it look quite a lot like the shape of a Templar Cross? You know, the ones that the Knights Templar used to have on their shields?
