Lettuce Contrast - _TNY_0873
The lesser marbled fritillary (Brenthis ino) is a smallish fritillary which I rarely see in my mother-in-law's garden. Judging by the host plants for the caterpillars, it should be right at home as there, they have readily access to two of them, both queen-of-the-prairie (Filipendula rubra) as well as the great burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis).
This particular specimen had landed on the lettuce which made for some nice contrasting colours. Also, this is of the rare shots where I didn't use the flash so it's just natural light.
