Upside Down Photography - _TNY_5488

The roof of my mom's summer house goes out a little bit over the patio and on the underside of that one I saw this male European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) - and the phot was rotated 180 degrees in post.

It being a male is easy to tell, both by the abdomen being small (no need to hold a whole bunch of eggs), but also by the way the pedipalps are so thick at the end.

Anyways, to shoot this one, I had to get a step ladder, but there was absolutely no way of getting a photo from this angle with the flash and diffusor hitting the underside of the roof (is it a ceiling when outside?) so I had to try something different if I wanted the shot.

The solution turned out to be to flip the camera around so the flash & diffuser were underneath it. This made for some strange ergonomics and I actually pressed the shutter using my left pinky so I am very pleased wih being able to nail the focus on the spider's face.

Have a look at this BTS shot of yors truly photographing a nice moth on the wall: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/51242586783/ - the white above me is where the spider was.
