Winter Fashion - _TNY_0193

Why the family of lacewings, Chrysopidae, have gotten their name isn't too difficult to understand when looking at this photo.

 

Tyipcally they have a green to blue colour, but over the winter they turn into a more brownish colour to better remain camouflaged when hibernating.

 

I found this one inside the window on my mother-in-law's greenhouse at Easter when temps that far up north were still pretty low and there was still some snow around.

 

Telling exact species with these guys is a little difficult, so I can't get more exact than Chrysopa sp. with this one.
