In the Corner of my Eye - _TNY_2716

Back in July, I was out chasing jumping spiders which I know like to hang around on the walls of my mother-in-law's garage. Upon not immediately finding any, I instead turned my attention to the parasitic wasps waiting right next to the nest holes of some solitary bees, no doubt to lay their own eggs in there as soon as the bees were done. Looked kinda grim really.

And then, in the corner of my eye I noticed something else sticking out and when carefully moving closer, I discovered this robber fly - which was a completely new species for me!

Moving extra extra slow to not scare it off, I got my camera to bear on it (with the Canon MP-E65 already on it) and actually managed a shot - this one - and then it took off!.

Turns out this is a female striped slender robberfly (Leptogaster cylindrica). I initially thought it was a much rarer cousin which never has been recorded this far north before, but it wasn't. Still quite cool-looking if you ask me.
