Muscular Fly, Pt. 2 - _TNY_0840

Robber flies, member of the family Asilidae, are muscular flies which are excellent fliers and feed on other flying insects which they intercept in mid-air using impressive spatial awareness to fly towards where the prey will be instead of where it is at the moment.

 

Once they catch their prey, they punch a hole in it using the stout rostrum and then inject a combined venom and digestive juice which both kill it and dissolve the innards into a

 

This particular specimen was parked on the patio, looking towards the sky for potential prey.
