Plumose - _TNY_5240
Sometimes it's impossible to tell if an insect is male or female - and sometimes, like with this male nonbiting midge (Chironomidae sp.), it is *very* easy.
I am of course talking about those massive plumose antennae which the males sport and use to locate ladies (who don't have them) with.
Unfortunately, I didn't remember to get a shot from straight above which would have been necessary to tell the exact species or even genus. Maybe next time.
This particular one was on a reed at the edge of the water in the Drevviken nature reserve in Skogås, just south of Stockholm, Sweden.
My son has his badminton practice in Skogås so instead of going back home for an hour and a half, I snuck around the reserve an found several interesting characters to shoot.
