Awesome Colour Combination! - _TNY_4217
The male and female brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) actually have clearly different colours. The male is more yellow while the female, like this one, has a paler colour, but with some light green in it. Do zoom in and note the purple shoulder and how cool the fur and scales look!
The brimstone has an unusually long lifespan for a butterfly and hibernate during the winter as an adult and can thus be seen in early spring and they mate after shortly after that. The new generation is hatched around July and it is not uncommon for the previous ones to still be flying then.
As it is so common, many people are completely unaware of how pretty they are when you get up close - like this one which is sitting on an intensely magenta-coloured rose campion (Silene coronaria).
