Before damsels and dragons can begin their life on the wing after hatching, they need to let the wings harden which takes a little while. If you find them at this time they are quite a lot easier to photograph as they simply cant fly away from you.
At first they also haven't developed their actual colours so the teneral specimens of the common bluet (Enallagma cyathigerum) like this one on my finger with a Neil Young kind of beard going, have an interesting matte grey hue.
