Famished, or Postpartum - _TNY_0951

Looking at the abdomen of this female goldenrod crab spider (Misumena vatia) we can notice that it is pretty wrinkled. This could be down to one of three things (or a ombination): Either the spider is very hungry or thirsty, or it could be that she has recently laid a whole bunch of eggs which means here abdonmen used to be much bigger.

 

Since this ambush hunter thought it a good idea to wait for pollinators to pounce on on top of a wilted heartleaf ox-eye (Telekia speciosa) - a place where perhaps not so many pollinating insects come, it might be hunger though.
