Redeyed, Eventually, Pt. 2 - _TNY_5507

If I say this is a male red-eyed damselfly (Erythromma najas) it might seem to be a weird choice of name as the eyes aren't particularily red.

The thing is that when damsels and dragonflies have just hatched they haven't gotten their final colours just yet. This one will have very red eyes later on though.

In this teneral stage, they have to wait for the wings to harden up and can't fly which is the probable reason why this one didn't leave the leaf in the Skeppnan nature reserve when I stuck my Canon MP-E65 lens up in it's face. The thing with this lens is that it can't take photos *further away* than 1:1 - ie the regular maximum magnification of most other macro lenses. Woth this being at 1:1 - I literally had to get this close to get it in focus.

For an even closer (1.8:1) shot of the same guy, check out part 1 here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/50372535036/

To see how different it will look once it has taken on it's actual colours, look here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/50405275806/
