Most moths are nocturnal, ie they are active during the night which mean that spectacular colours aren't as useful as for butterflies so most of them are quite drab and more oriented around not being spotted when not active during the day.
Some moths, like this Chimney sweep (Odezia atrata) on the other hand are diurnal, active during the day. And applying the same logic, it would have some nice colouration - but as you can see it went for a very minimalistic look instead.
