Stack 'em, Pack 'em and Rack 'em - _TNY_1900

The only social wasps that hibernate through the long Swedish winter are the new queens. the rest of them only live through one summer and die in the fall.

We have had wasps (common wasp, Vespula vulgaris) outside the front door a couple of years and they haven't bothered anybody the slightest. The light next to the door is a round glass thingy which is on through the entire night and this one have the old and tired wasps a bit confused.

They fly against the glass, sometimes just one - but at other times there can be quite a lot of them, each making a little "dink" sound every time the poor little guys bump into the glass.

This shot was taken early in the morning when the wasps, tired from all the dinking, I suppose, had settled in on top of the lamp. The left side is the opaque glass surrounding the light source and the right side is the fixture. Pretty nicely organized parking, right?
