Getting Lucky, Pt. 2 - _TNY_4409

I couldn't believe my luck when I was chasing green tiger beetles (Cicindela campestris) near lake Stensjön in Tyresta National Park when this mating pair landed within two meters of me!

After a rapid lens change (without taking my eyes off the beetles) I managed to inch forward close enough to be able to snap off a couple of shots of the happy couple.

This shot is also great for showing one of the principal differences in appearance used to identify which sex they are. As you can see, the male has much larger mandibles which obviously are used to hold on to the female during the act.

Here's a shot of one which I was satisfied with taken just before I stumbled on these two: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/49855835493/
