Orange Halo - _TNY_6199

Here is a caterpillar which later is going to turn into an old-world swallowtail (Papilio machaon), also known as the common yellow swallowtail, busy muching away at a leaf on the purple angelica (Angelica gigas).

 

From this angle, the frontmost row of orange spots form a nice circle if you count the bottom part which is in fact the non-deployed osmeterium (the Y-shaped foul-smelling thing they extend as a defense when startled).
