Wrong Lens for Panoramas ..Not! - _TNY_1555P2

Here's a bit of a rarity. This is technically a panorama shot made using the Canon MP-E65mm lens(!) - at 2:1 magnification.

In case you don't know the lens, the MP-E65 is one which begins (at 1:1) where normal macro lenses end - and then continue closer all the way in to 5:1 magnification where it's about 7 mm from the left to right side of the frame. This obviously makes it a far from ideal butterfly lens, but here it worked out - for quite special reasons.

You see, I botched the first shot of this female brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) and just got the top half so I took another shot, but lower. Back home I realized it would be possible to combine them into one using Photoshop and after some stitching and adding in some extra empty background where it was missing, I ended up with a 37.1 megapixel shot of a butterfly which isn't too shabby for a 21.1 megapixel camera!

Here's a photo of my monitor where both of the original shots are showing: imgur.com/RpMSL0Y
