Closed When at Rest - _TNY_5192

The green hairstreak (Callophrys rubi) is a quite pretty butterfly and much more common around here than most people think. It's just that their green and brown camouflage works amazingly well to hide them even though you would think the sparkling metallic sheen on their wings would make them easy to spot.

The genus name, Callophrys, is Greek and actually means beautiful eyebrows while the species name, rubi, is in reference to bramble which is called Rubus. This as it was thought that the caterpillars only ate leaves of brambles. Later, it has been discovered that the caterpillars actually can eat quite a few different species of plants.

This species alway keep their wings closed when at rest.
