Hairy Legs and Lots of Speed - _TNY_4404
I know a spot near lake Stensjön in Tyresta National park where I can usually spot some green tiger beetles (Cicindela campestris) in the spring.
These are predators and hunt using their great speed so they are not the easiest to get close to.
Typically I see one on the path, get flat on my stomach and inch forward until I get almost close enough to focus when the beetle runs a meter forward. So I continue inching forward and when I get close it runs another meter. After a couple of tries they often open up their wings and fly back to where you started and the whole thing starts over again.
The whole thing is quite frustrating, but still worth it when you finally get close and nail a shot of this little emerald amongst all the drab grey.
Looking at the mandibles of this one, we can tell it is a female as the males have much larger jaws.
