Drying Up - _TNY_9469
The butterfly known as the mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) in North America (and a direct translation of that in Swedish) is actually called the Camberwell beauty in Britain.
This particular one was very worn as well as tired when I found it floating in the rain water barrel in the garden. It got to rest a while on my finger while gettin gthe wings dry enough to fly again.
This species is one of those who hibernate through the winter as an adult which is why it is one of the earliest species seen in spring.
This year I spotted one (not this specimen) as early as March 22nd which is quite early up here at the same latitude as southern Alaska.
