Shot Mid-Air - _TNY_1193
Shooting with a Raynox DCR-250 mounted on your macro lens offers a nice boost in magnification (from 1:1 to ~2.6:1 on my 100mm lens), but the depth of field becomes very shallow.
That's why I am quite pleased with this shot of a mid-air female pied hoverfly (Scaeva pyrastri), also known as the white-clubbed hoverfly.
How do we know it's a female, you ask? Well, look at the eyes. If they aren't touching like on this one, then it's a female hoverfly, but if they do (like in this male: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/48629005103/), then it is a male.
