The pellucid fly (Volucella pellucens) is so named because of the translucent (ie pellucid) ivory-white band on the abdomen. Here in Sweden we call it "fönsterblomfluga", menaing window hoverfly for the same reason.
It is one of the larger hoverfly species and those compound eyes are always a joy to get close in on.
