Different is Good - _TNY_8440
Here's a kind of different hoverfly. This is one of the hovers in the Cheilosia genus. I don't know of an official common name, but have seen them referred to as "vegan hoverflies". In Swedish they are known as örtblomflugor which would become "herbal hoverflies" in English.
Cheilosia is one of the more diverse genera, but most of them lack the bright colours of other hoverflies and are black or largely uncoloured.
Males of most hoverflies are easily distinguishable because of the way the eyes touch each other so this is clearly a guy, but looking at the eyes I must say they are massive, reminding me of a visor really.
