This handsome fellow looking straight into the camera (and a couple of hundred directions at the same time) is a male pellucid fly (Volucella pellucens).
The lovely pink flower he has landed on is a great masterwort (Astrantia major), one of my summer favourites - both because it is quite photogenique, but also because the insects seem to love it and stay on them a little extra even though I sitck my lens in their faces like this.
