This One Knows the Difference - _TNY_0869

When you say "blueberries", a lot of people in northern Europe know just what you mean, thinking they grow in our forests, but this is actually not true. The small blue berries we have are in fact bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus).

Blueberries (Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus) are North American and though closely related, not the same thing. The easiest way to tell the difference is by looking at the flesh of it - blueberries have green flesh while bilberries are reddish purple all the way through (and taste better!).

So, what does all this have to do with this sexy shieldbug with really bad-ass spikes on his shoulders?

Well, it is actually a bilberry shield bug (Elasmucha ferrugata) and I found him on the kitchen sink when my mom had been out picking bilberries and were sorting them so evidently they really like bilberries!
