(This rather large weevil on its way down the long leaf of a day lily is a vine weevil Otiorhynchus sulcatus).
It can be a quite serious pest in the garden and the adult weevil feed on the edges of leaf (they love rhododendron) causing a notched margin. The larvae live underground and feed on the roots of the plants and can even cause plant death.
