Looking at this grasshopper, you can immediately tell that it isn't an adult, but instead a nymph.
The way to do this is to look at the wings. Adult hoppers have large wings going along the entire top of the body which they (obviously) use to fly, but young ones like this one only have short unusable ones so they can make jumps, but nothing longer than that.
What is a lot more difficult though, is figuring out exactly what species this is. They look different from the adults which, coupled with being quite variable in colour and pattern, makes it almost impossible.
