A Special Hoverfly - _TNY_0127

The marmalade hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus) is a special hoverfly in several way, not only is it pretty - like here on the flower of a woolly burdock (Arctium tomentosum), but also because it is migratory and travel impressive distances.

Also, it is one of very few flies which is able to crush grains of pollen to feed on them.

The larvae feeds on aphids and can actually make a difference as a pest control agent.
