Under the Rue - _TNY_6297
This flower with such a an amazing deep purple colour is meadow-rue (Thalictrum rochebrunianum). The flowers are quite small, but the plant itself can become quite high - around two meters (6-7').
I am not entirely sure what species of hoverfly it is that has made an upside-down landing on it, but my best guess is either a female hairy-eyed Syrphus (Syrphus torvus) or a male humming Syrphus (S. ribesii).
Another shot of the same hoverfly on the same flower here: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/47997555407/
