Love, Death or a Threesome? - _TNY_7541

Here are four walnut orb-weavers (Nuctenea umbratica) just outside my front door in mid-October.

The two on the left are males, cautiously courting the large female in the middle.

So where's the fourth? Well, that shrivled thing to the right is (or was) another male who wasn't sexy enough to convince the big lady that he was boyfriend material and ended up as dinner instead.

Kind of makes it more understandable why the two new suitors are taking it slow, right?

I didn't stick around (in the rain) to see how it all ended, but there were still just one dead body there in the morning so hopefully one of them scored.
