Karlsplatz, Vienna
I went to Vienna before Christmas. It was the most magical experience and I will certainly be going back.
This is one of two underground station pavilions, which stand facing one another, designed by Otto Wagner around 1900. Frankly I nearly wet myself I was so excited. Every detail of these buildings screams quality, and so I took pictures of everything right down to he doorknobs and drainpipes! I rather wish London had some underground stations faced with marble and decorated with gold leaf.....perhaps I will suggest it to Boris! (although Austerity Chic it is not).
From my DK guide book: "The turn of the 20th century saw a flowering of the visual arts in Vienna. A new generation of avant-garde artists formed the Secession in 1896 and, together with architects and designers, forged close ties between the fine and decorative arts, and created new architectural styles".
