The Shuttle Orbiter 101 Enterprise and a NASA 747 carrier aircraft conducted the first free flight of the Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) on August 12, 1977 at the Dryden Flight Research Center in Southern California. Astronauts Fred W. Haise Jr., commander, and C. Gordon Fullerton, pilot, were the crew of the Enterprise. The ALT free flights were designed te verify Orbiter subsonic airworthiness, integrated system operations and pilot-guided approach and landing capability and satisfying prerequisited to automatic flight control and navigation mode.
