White Admiral
I stayed with my good friend Alistair while I was attending the Birdfair and he took me to a local wood to see the butterflies. White Admirals had been on the wing for about three weeks but fortunately we found this one that wasn't looking too shabby. It was feeding on marjoram, but in the shade, which surprised me as there was plenty of marjoram in the sunshine.
White Admirals are a butterfly of southern woodlands and are a species I see only rarely, which is a shame as they are one of my favourites. I love their masterful way of flying where a single flick of the wings can send them gliding majestically for ages. The upperwing pattern is breathtaking with high contrast jet black and snow white like this www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/9296344045/in/photolist
Its caterpillars feed on wild honeysuckle and its scientific name is Limenitis camilla, and both names are of classical origin. Limenitis was a name applied to deities who protected harbours, while Camilla was a Volscian princess mentioned by Virgil in The Aeneid.
