Black-winged Stilt
I posted a frame-filler of the male Black-winged Stilt, so here's a frame-filler of the female. The first fully documented breeding was in 1945 when three pairs were at Nottingham Sewage Works, raising four young. Breeding attempts since then have been sporadic, but with increasing frequency. This year there have been about half a dozen breeding attempts. But generally speaking they are still only a scarce visitor to Britain, and vary in numbers from year to year. Occasional birds stay for long periods, such as "Sammy the Stilt" frequented the Titchwell area of North Norfolk for more than a decade (Aug 1993 - May 2005) and provided many bird listers with a welcome year tick. This pair have moved around various wetland sites in South and West Yorkshire and I photographed them at Adwick Washlands.
