Fieldfare

Apologies but it has taken me years to capture a series of Redwings and Fieldfares and I think photos like this are too good not to post. On the rare occasions I have managed to photograph them eating berries the shots have all been cluttered. But this one perched obligingly on an isolated sprig of berried Holly, in good light, with a clear blue sky behind. I think the reason that Fieldfares are so difficult to photograph is because they are always in flocks, and a flock is only as brave as the timidest individual. So if one bird flies off alarm-calling, it usually takes the whole flock with it. But this Holly tree was in quite a busy road through my village and they seemed to have got used to people walking past (the pavement is on the other side of the road), so it enabled me to take lots of close photos, until the berries ran out. And this was taken, hand held while I was stood in the open near the Holly tree.
