Roe Buck
I was out this morning and spotted this Roe Buck walking alongside a tumbledown wall. I noticed that he kept sticking his tongue out and tasting the air trying to catch the scent of a doe. The peak rutting season for Roe Deer is mid July to the end of August. Pregnancy lasts for 300 days, but the first half of this is embryonic diapause when development is put on hold. They normally give birth during May and the first half of June, usually twins. This male was starting to climb over the broken wall but paused and looked back when he heard my camera, so I got the eye contact I was after. I think this is a young male as his antlers are pretty small, even for a Roe. And that hind leg looks extraordinarily long to me, almost as if it is on stilts.
