Icebergs and Whales
This was taken on a cloudless, windless day in Antarctica's Weddell Sea where we saw dozens of whales and seals. This photograph shows two Fin Whales gently surfacing together. Fin Whales are the second largest whale on the planet. The front animal has taken a breath and is heading back below the surface so the fin, way back on the body, shows briefly. The back animal is just surfacing and you can see the splashguard around its blowholes to the left. But its fin will not show until it starts to dive again. I cold weather when whales have taken a huge breath, the blow at the surface can be large, conspicuous and long-lasting (like your breath on a cold, still day. But the whales were so leisurely on this unusually warm, windless day there was hardly a blow to be seen.
