Nachtwacht
"Nachtwacht", Tim Lowly © 2015, acrylic on panel, 17" x 22"
This painting is part of the re. Rainbow Girl project. The "meaning" of these paintings is suggested in part by their conversation with specific works of art–mainly well known European paintings. In the case of this painting the title alludes to one of Rembrandt's most famous paintings De Nachtwacht (The Nightwatch) . Rembrandt's painting was an unusually theatrical group portrait: depicting the Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq as if they were actually preparing for the night watch. For me the most striking moment in the painting is the young girl, spotlit back among the figures, who brings a disarming female youthful presence to an otherwise machismo gathering. In my much smaller painting only that innocent, disarming presence remains. Steadfastly waiting, watching.
