Pacific

Pacific, Tim Lowly © 1991, tempera and gold leaf on panel, 12" x 12.5", private collection.

For Hilda Carper, whose pacific presence and actions inspired this painting when I made it years ago. Hilda was a member of Reba Place Fellowship in Evanston. One of the many things that I liked about that group was it's advocacy of pacifism. Hilda Carper, in her presence and actions, was particularly pacific. At the time we (the USA) were involved in a highly questionable war in the Iraq... which inspired the setting of the painting (as well as the painting Home). The on-going turmoil of that region continues to draw much attention. What is less noticed are the non-violent actions and other peace-making efforts of groups like the Christian Peacemaker Teams ( www.cpt.org/ ). Perhaps that kind of a response is as foolish as pouring a bowl of water on the parched desert. Jesus seemed to suggest otherwise..
