Ravana shaking the mountain - Cleveland Museum of Art

Ravana shaking Mount Kailasa, made about 700 AD in Madhya Pradesh, India. On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Sandstone.

In some branches of Hinduism, Shiva is the ultimate creator of the universe and lives with his consort, Parvati, on top of Mount Kailasa.

In one story, the demon Ravana tries to steal Mount Kailasa for his own. Shiva pressed down on the mountain with his toe to keep it in place, but Parvati clung to Shiva in terror. This statue depicts that dramatic moment when she did so.
