atrium 02 - Cleveland Museum of Art - 2014-11-26
Atriuim of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Founded in 1913 with an endowment from prominent Cleveland industrialists Hinman Hurlbut, John Huntington, and Horace Kelley, the original white marble Beaux-Arts building was designed by the local architectural firm of Hubbell & Benes. It opened in 1916. An addition by Marcel Breuer was added in 1971.
A $350 million renovation and expansion began in 2005. The architect was Rafael Viñoly. The original 1916 structure was completely renovated, a new east wing added, and an atrium courtyard covered by a glass canopy constructed. The expansion brought the museum's total floor space to 592,000 square feet -- an increase of approximately 65 percent.
The renovated building reopened, in June 2008, the East Wing in June 2009, and the remainder of the old building and atrium in June 2010. The museum now includes a store, gourmet café, expanded parking garage, and atrium.
