Meiron - Stranger # 481 / 500 - Explored

Poet, philosopher. Meiron came to Israel from Moscow in the mid 70s.

I met him on the beach and we started to talk.

"Do you know what Meiron means?" he asked me?

"Is it Russian?"I wondered.

"No, it means happy water in Hebrew."

"May Ron, oh yes, I see, of course," I said, "it is a beautiful name."

"Like most Jews, I too have two names: Meiron Meir. Meir like my grandfather...

"He had travelled to America long before I was born, but they didn't let him in because of an epidemic which was going on there. He returned to Russia. The people of his old village felt sorry for him and urged him to change his name from Meir to Meiron. It didn't sound Jewish...

So, when I was born, my parents gave me his both names."
