2020 - COVID-19 HAL Cruise - Chile - Punta Arenas - Stella & Ventus Australis Cruise Ships
March 16, the Zaandam is holding its position at Punta Arenas. Two other cruise ships (Stella & Ventus Australis) were permitted to dock at city centre pier - Muelle Arturo Prat (Arturo Prat Pier).
Zaandam will not be permitted to dock.
Port authorities permitted the Stella passengers to disembark and transfer to the airport. However, the airport would not accept them so they were returned to the ship and quarantined on the ship for 12 days and then allowed to fly out of Punta Arenas.

ABOUT MUELLE PRAT:
Punta Arenas has a single finger pier, Muelle Prat - designed for large ships. The pier sheltered from the prevailing NW'ly winds but very open to winds from all other directions.
Muelle Arturo Prat de Punta Arenas is operated by the Southern Port Company.
Prior to the expansion of the Arturo Prat Pier, it was only good for ships up to 186 meters in length. The first Expansion Stage, ended in mid-2017- extended serves for ships of up to 250 meters.
Once the next phase is complete it will be possible to dock cruise ships up to 290 meters in length.
The company indicated the upgrade phase will open Friday, 29 May, 2020.
