2019 - Road Trip - 56 - Helena - 2 - Power Block
The six story Power Block was designed by Willets & Pashley of Chicago and built by Shaffer & Read in 1889 by magnate Thomas C. Power,
An interesting design feature at the corner windows each floor has the same number of corner windows for each floor tier.
The Power Building presides over the intersection of Sixth and Main in downtown Helena. Long known as the Power Block, the original keystone over the Sixth Ave. entrance has carved into it "Power Building"
The building housed Power's American National Bank from 1892 through the 1920’s.
Today the building contributes to
Helena’s historic district as listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Helena’s historic district is very nice but unfortunately in the 1970’s more than 240 of its gems were razed during an ill conceived urban renewal project. 61 of the buildings were of historical significance - unbelievable but all to common for the time.

Mr. McGrath:
I discovered some of your photos online and I appreciate your work, you have a keen eye. I will soon be a tenant in the Power Block building in Helena, MT, and I especially like your photo from 2019 (attached) of the building. I am developing a website for my Montana law and mediation practice, and I would like to include your photograph as a depiction of my location. May I have your permission to use it for that limited purpose? I would certainly provide attribution identifying it as your photo and abide by any restrictions you impose.
I appreciate your consideration. Thank you.
