2017 - Vancouver - 2017 Mural Festival - Vancouver Studio (After Matisse)

Another mural from the 2017 Vancouver Mural Festival. The festival is presenting 60 murals in Mt. Pleasant and Strathcona neighbourhoods. This mural dwarfs the tiny people.

Vancouver Studio (After Matisse) 2017, by Andy Dixon:

This work is one of the largest single walls painted by a Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) artist to date. Andy Dixon’s vibrant portrayal of his nearby Mount Pleasant Studio space is more than 90 feet tall, covers more than 6,000 square feet, and can be seen from the Main Street SkyTrain station 10 blocks away.

The piece was made possible by the support of Westbank Properties and Hootsuite Media.

Well-known local artist Dixon says this piece depicts the inside of his studio in Mount Pleasant, which, like many art spaces in the neighbourhood, is under threat of demolition. This painting is located on the back of a Hootsuite building. It is the largest piece in VMF's collection to date and took Dixon more than a week to complete.

GALLERY LANE

Six blocks of alleyway running north to south between Main St and Quebec St is home to close to 30 murals; the highest concentration in one place. VMF specifically targeted this lane for murals as it is currently an informal bike route from Mount Pleasant down to False Creek and beyond.

Its potential was identified in the Mount Pleasant community plan and so as new zoning brings more development to the neighbourhood, VMF artists were excited to use art as a way of claiming the space for the community.
