2016 - Mexico - Tepoztlán - El Tepozteco - High on a Mountain

We are back in Tepoztlan for our second visit. First time was a day trip from Cuernavaca a few years ago and we thought a longer stay was warranted.

We are here to climb up the mountain (again) to the El Tepozteco ruins visible top centre.

Tepozteco is an archaeological site located over 2,000 meters above sea level and 600 meters above the valley of Tepoztlan. The site built between 11500 and 1350 AD was devoted to Ometochtli-Tepoxtécatl, god of pulque, fertility and harvest.

The pyramid known as the Casa del Tepozteco measures 9.50 meters in height and it housed the idol Two Rabbits (Ometochtli representation) which was destroyed by evangelical friars afer the Spanish (and Catholic church) arrived to destroy many historic sites that ran counter tothe church ideology.

In 1895 engineer Francisco Rodriguez and the community cleared the pyramid of vegetation covering the ruins and now it is one of the greatest sacred (and tourist) symbols of Tepoztlan.
