In eastern Utah in August, the waters of the arroyo "Cisco Wash" were a series of stagnant puddles among a landscape of desert scrub.

Would "amid" have been a better choice than "among," in this instance.

All this talk of "scrub" and "wash" has got me craving a sponge and a bucket of soapy water!
